Smoking S.T.O.P.S. Here!

Maryland's college and university tobacco control coalitions have united to create healthier, tobacco-free campuses across the state by building relationships with other campuses, offering prevention and education initiatives, establishing and supporting policies, and sustaining diverse involvement.

Who We Are

We are the Students Together Organizing Prevention Strategies Coalition, or S.T.O.P.S. for short! The purpose of S.T.O.P.S. is to form and strengthen partnerships among colleges and universities to address tobacco use prevention and cessation, as part of Maryland's Comprehensive Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Program.

Campus Life

Our purpose is to implement activities and programs focusing on tobacco use prevention and to provide support and resources to those on campus who want to quit using tobacco. The key to our campus-based coalitions is that students take the lead roll in deciding their campus initiatives! As a member of S.T.O.P.S., students and advisors are provided professional development and leadership opportunities related to tobacco control initiatives.

Here's How We Do It

  • Students, along with their advisor, join to form a diverse campus tobacco control coalition.
  • Each campus coalition conducts regular planning activities, including coalition meetings, and implements tobacco control initiatives on campus.
  • All campus-based coalitions come together at least once a semester to meet as a state level S.T.O.P.S. coalition. This statewide meeting provides training and opportunities for networking and sharing resources.

The coalitions are funded by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH).

Many campuses, other than those participating in S.T.O.P.S., also have their own tobacco control initiatives. We hope that this website will provide Maryland colleges and universities the necessary resources and ability to network with other schools in order to address tobacco use prevention and cessation as a unified statewide movement!
